Buddhist Culture and Heritage Tour

The Buddhist Culture and Heritage Tour is an 11-day journey that weaves the great sites of the Buddha's life into a classic sweep of North India. Beginning in Delhi and travelling through Jaipur, Agra and the temples of Khajuraho, it reaches the sacred Ganges at Varanasi before following the pilgrim road to Sarnath, Bodhgaya, Rajgir, Nalanda and Patna. It is designed for travellers who want both the Buddhist heritage trail and the Mughal and Rajput icons that surround it, all at an unhurried, privately guided pace.

Tour overview

This is one of the richest cultural circuits we run, because it braids together three very different threads of Indian civilisation. You have the imperial monuments of the Golden Triangle — Mughal Delhi, the Taj Mahal at Agra and the palaces of pink Jaipur; you have the exquisite carved temples of Khajuraho in Bundelkhand; and you have the living Buddhist landscape of the Ganges plain, where Prince Siddhartha became the Buddha and where his first disciples carried his teaching across Asia.

Because so much of the route follows the actual footsteps of the Buddha, we pace it gently and use the most comfortable combination of road, train and short flights to cover the long distances of the North Indian plain. The itinerary below is our recommended flow; as with every Era tour it is fully private and tailor-made, so we can add nights in Varanasi or Bodhgaya for quiet meditation, adjust the hotel category, or extend into Lumbini in Nepal or the northern sites of Kushinagar and Sravasti for a deeper pilgrimage.

We have guided this circuit for pilgrims, students of Buddhism and curious first-time visitors alike since our founding in 1997. Licensed local guides join you in each city, a dedicated car and driver stay with you throughout, and our Delhi office is on call around the clock.

The Buddha's enlightenment trail

From the first sermon at Sarnath to the Bodhi tree at Bodhgaya and the ruined university of Nalanda, you follow the places where Buddhism was born and taught.

Golden Triangle icons included

The Taj Mahal, Agra Fort, Amber Fort and Mughal Delhi are all built into the route, so the pilgrimage doubles as a grand first tour of North India.

Dawn on the Ganges

A sunrise boat ride past the ghats of Varanasi is one of the most moving experiences on earth, and it sits at the heart of this journey.

The temples of Khajuraho

A rare chance to add the UNESCO-listed sculpted temples of Khajuraho, among the finest medieval stonework in India, to a Buddhist itinerary.

FAQ

Buddhist Culture and Heritage Tour — your questions answered

The key Buddhist sites are Sarnath, Bodhgaya, Rajgir and Nalanda. Sarnath near Varanasi is where the Buddha gave his first sermon, Bodhgaya is where he attained enlightenment beneath the Bodhi tree, Rajgir is where he taught for many seasons, and Nalanda is the ruined ancient Buddhist university.

About eleven days works well for this route, which combines the Buddhist trail with the Golden Triangle and Khajuraho. If you want a pure pilgrimage focused only on the Buddhist sites, a shorter loop from Varanasi through Bodhgaya, Rajgir and Nalanda is possible, and we can also extend to Lumbini, Kushinagar and Sravasti.

October to March is the best time, when the Ganges plain is cool and pleasant for sightseeing. April to June is very hot across Delhi, Varanasi and Bihar, and July to September brings the monsoon, so the winter months are far more comfortable for a journey of this length.

Yes, it suits anyone interested in Indian history and culture, not only Buddhist pilgrims. Alongside the Buddhist sites you see the Taj Mahal, the forts and palaces of Delhi, Agra and Jaipur, and the sculpted temples of Khajuraho, so it works equally well as a rich first tour of North India.

You travel by a combination of private car, one train and one short flight. The Golden Triangle leg is by chauffeur-driven car, there is a train from Agra to Jhansi for Khajuraho, a flight from Khajuraho to Varanasi, and the Buddhist plains from Varanasi to Bodhgaya, Nalanda and Patna are covered by road.
