The classic luxury route runs from Kochi's old quarter — Chinese fishing nets, colonial lanes, a heritage hotel in Fort Kochi — up to Munnar, where tea estates ripple to the horizon and the finest stays are plantation bungalows with valley views and open fires. Then south through the cardamom hills to Thekkady for spice-garden walks and Periyar's wildlife, down to the backwaters for the houseboat night, and finally the Malabar coast — a quiet beach resort or an Ayurveda retreat, where India's ancient wellness tradition is practised seriously, for treatments measured in days rather than hours. When to go
October to March is the prime season — dry, lush and comfortable everywhere from the hills to the coast. The monsoon (June–August) is Kerala's secret season: dramatic skies, empty roads, the landscape at its greenest, and the classic time for Ayurveda.
