What the Pushkar Camel Fair actually is

At its root, the fair is a centuries-old livestock trading event: herders bring tens of thousands of camels, cattle and horses from across Rajasthan to trade, decorate and show them on the dunes just outside Pushkar town. Around it has grown a full mela, with folk music, turban-tying and moustache competitions, camel races, a Ferris wheel and a lively fairground. The dates are set to coincide with Kartik Purnima, when Hindu pilgrims travel to Pushkar Lake, one of India's few Brahma temple towns, to bathe in its sacred waters, so trading, carnival and pilgrimage all happen in the same few days, around the same small town. Few events anywhere layer a working cattle market, a folk carnival and a genuine Hindu pilgrimage quite so closely together, which is exactly what makes it worth planning around rather than stumbling into.

Livestock trading and camel decoration build through the earlier days, and the atmosphere intensifies towards the full moon night of Kartik Purnima, which falls on 24 November 2026. If your schedule only allows a short visit, the days immediately around Kartik Purnima are the most atmospheric, with the fullest fairground, the biggest crowds at the lake, and the most photogenic evening light. If you would rather see the trading itself with fewer crowds and cooler temperatures underfoot, the earlier days in the window suit better, and camps are easier to book at shorter notice.

Day by day: how the fair builds

In the opening days, herders arrive and set up camp on the fairground, and the dunes fill gradually with camels being washed, shaved into patterns and decorated with bright textiles and jewellery, and this is when the trading itself is most active, with genuine bargaining over animals rather than performance for visitors. Through the middle days, the fairground fills out properly, adding a Ferris wheel, stalls, competitions and livestock judging, and evenings bring folk music and dance performances around campfires. In the final days, as Kartik Purnima approaches, the focus shifts from the dunes to Pushkar Lake itself, where pilgrim numbers swell noticeably and the ghats fill with oil lamps and evening prayers on the full moon night, the most crowded and most moving evening of the entire fair.

Where to stay

Tented camps set up on or near the fairground for the fair's duration put you right among the action, from simple canvas tents to genuinely luxurious camps with proper beds, attached bathrooms and full dining, but the good ones sell out months in advance, so we book early on behalf of guests once dates are confirmed. Hotels and guesthouses in Pushkar town itself are a calmer alternative, a short drive or rickshaw ride from the fairground, and a better fit for guests who want their comfort back at the end of a long day of dust, crowds and camels rather than another night under canvas. Whichever you choose, expect the town and its roads to be considerably busier than at any other time of year, and to plan transfers with extra time built in.

Photography etiquette

The fair is a photographer's dream, but it is also a livelihood and a pilgrimage for the people in your frame, not a staged backdrop. Ask before photographing traders and herders up close, and expect a small tip or a friendly exchange to smooth the way; wide shots of the dunes and fairground are generally uncontroversial without asking. Pushkar Lake's ghats are a sacred site: cameras, shoes and sometimes certain fabrics are restricted there, and photography of people bathing or praying should be handled with particular care and always with permission, since this is a place of active worship for thousands of pilgrims, not a photo opportunity laid on for visitors. A polite question, a genuine smile and a willingness to put the camera down when asked go a long way with both traders and pilgrims, and tend to open doors rather than close them.

Getting to Pushkar

Pushkar sits roughly 400 km from Delhi, about a six to seven-hour drive, and around 145 km from Jaipur, roughly three hours by road, with Jaipur's airport the nearest useful gateway for guests flying in. Most guests fly or drive into Jaipur first and continue to Pushkar by private car, which also makes it straightforward to combine the fair with the rest of a Rajasthan route rather than treating it as an isolated side trip. Roads into Pushkar are considerably busier during fair week, so we build extra time into every transfer around the fair dates, and we time arrivals to avoid the worst of the traffic converging on the town from Jaipur, Ajmer and beyond. For guests flying internationally, Delhi remains the more common gateway, with a domestic connection or a road transfer on to Jaipur before continuing to Pushkar.
