Kashmir itinerary
A proven day-by-day plan for the Kashmir Valley — Srinagar, Sonmarg, Pahalgam and Gulmarg — from a government-approved operator, with honest advice on how many days you need and when to go.
Updated · Written by the Era Tours team, New Delhi
A great Kashmir itinerary needs five to seven days and follows a simple, beautiful arc: Srinagar and Dal Lake, then the three valleys — Sonmarg, Pahalgam and Gulmarg — each showing a different face of the Himalaya, before circling back to Srinagar for the Mughal gardens. Below is the exact plan we run for guests, day by day, with the driving distances that shape it. It mirrors our Kashmir Delight tour, which you can book and tailor.
How many days do you need?
5 days covers the highlights if you focus — Dal Lake, Gulmarg and one of Pahalgam or Sonmarg. 7 days is the ideal, taking in all three valleys at a relaxed pace with a houseboat night. 10 days lets you add quieter meadows like Doodhpathri or Yusmarg, slow down for walks, or combine Kashmir with Ladakh. The valleys are close together but the mountain roads are slow, so we keep driving days sensible.
The 7-day Kashmir itinerary, day by day
Day 1: Arrive Srinagar · Shikara on Dal Lake. Fly into Srinagar and transfer to your hotel or a Dal Lake houseboat. In the soft evening light, take a hand-paddled shikara across the lake, past floating gardens and the wooden houseboats — the quintessential first taste of Kashmir.
Day 2: Srinagar → Sonmarg → Srinagar (≈90 km each way). A day trip to Sonmarg, the “meadow of gold”, ringed by glaciers and alpine peaks. Walk the meadows, or ride up towards the Thajiwas glacier, then return to Srinagar for the night.
Day 3: Srinagar → Pahalgam (≈110 km, ~4 hrs). Drive south through saffron fields and Awantipora’s ruins to Pahalgam, in the pine-clad Lidder valley. An afternoon to settle in beside the rushing river.
Day 4: Pahalgam — Aru, Chandanwari & Betab Valley. Explore Pahalgam’s side valleys: the meadows of Aru, the film-famous Betab Valley, and Chandanwari. A gentle, scenic day of short drives and walks.
Day 5: Pahalgam → Gulmarg (≈140 km, ~4–5 hrs) · Gondola. On to Gulmarg, the “meadow of flowers” and India’s premier alpine resort. Ride the Gulmarg Gondola — one of the world’s highest cable cars — up towards Apharwat Peak for staggering Himalayan views.
Day 6: Gulmarg → Srinagar (≈90 km) · Mughal Gardens. Return to Srinagar and spend the afternoon in the terraced Mughal gardens — Nishat, Shalimar and Chashma Shahi — laid out above the lake, and the old city’s mosques and bazaars.
Day 7: Depart Srinagar. A final morning by the lake before your transfer to the airport — or continue to Ladakh or Delhi for onward travel.
Best time to go
Kashmir rewards every season differently: spring (April–May) for blossom and tulips, summer (June–August) as a cool escape, autumn (September–October) for golden chinars, and winter for snow and skiing at Gulmarg. Spring and autumn are the most photogenic. For how Kashmir fits a longer India trip, see our best time to visit India guide.
Combine & extend
Kashmir pairs naturally with Ladakh for a full Himalayan journey, or with a few days in Delhi and the Golden Triangle at the start or end. Because parts of the wider region are sensitive, we plan routes that stay well within the safe, visited valley — see our is India safe guide for how we approach it.
FAQ
Kashmir itinerary — frequently asked questions
Five to seven days is the sweet spot for a Kashmir itinerary — enough to enjoy Srinagar and Dal Lake and to visit the three great valleys of Sonmarg, Pahalgam and Gulmarg without rushing. Five days covers the highlights at a comfortable pace; seven adds time to slow down, walk more, and add a houseboat night. Ten days lets you go deeper, add Doodhpathri or Yusmarg, or combine Kashmir with Ladakh.
A great 7-day Kashmir itinerary is: arrive Srinagar and a shikara on Dal Lake; a day trip to Sonmarg’s glacier meadows; on to Pahalgam for the Lidder and Betab valleys; up to Gulmarg for the gondola and alpine slopes; back to Srinagar for the Mughal gardens and old city; then depart. It balances lake, meadow, forest and high-alpine scenery, with easy driving days between each.
Yes, five days is enough to see the best of Kashmir if you focus. A workable 5-day plan is Srinagar and Dal Lake, then Gulmarg, then Pahalgam (or swap in a Sonmarg day trip), returning to Srinagar for the gardens before flying out. You’ll skip a valley or two, but you’ll still get the lake, the meadows and the mountains. We tailor which valleys to include around your interests.
Kashmir is beautiful from April to October — tulips and blossom in spring, cool green escape in summer, and golden chinar trees in autumn — while winter (December to February) brings snow and skiing at Gulmarg. Spring and autumn are the most photogenic; summer is the classic escape from the Indian plains. See our best time to visit India guide for how it fits a wider trip.
